Can we today paint, purely and simply, without condition or reserve, the portrait of Modesty? Does this require an attitude and posture full of cynicism? Or is it just a question of affinities of characters in search of the happiness of the senses? The answer turns out to be more subtle and delicate: it is a matter of freedom of conscience. Certainly, but men are truly incapable of assuming it. Passion or revenge? Drunkenness does not reason and imagination always wins. Only one way possible: it is certainly a question of going to meet the other. Art can thus extend its helping hand magnificently and redeem the remnants of humanity by making them more beautiful
