RISQUES SANITAIRES LIES A L’UTILISATION DES PESTICIDES DANS LA RIZICULTURE IRRIGUEE A NIAMEY
Abstract
The present study focuses on the health risks of the application of pesticides in rice-growing areas of
municipal districts IV and V of Niamey. A surveywasconductedamong235ricefarmers. The questionnaire
focused on socioeconomiccharacteristics, pesticides used, protection during pesticide application, and packaging
management. The resultsrevealedthatrice cultivation is an activitygenerallypracticed by men
(100%). TheIlliteracy (62%) of farmers and insufficient training (73%) on the use of pesticides do not allow the
fulfillment ofgood phytosanitary practices. In addition, the majority of ricefarmers (74%) do not
protectthemselveswhenusing pesticides, and most (86%) throw pesticide packaging into the environment.
Nineteen types of pesticides have been identified, 68% of which are prohibited. The main active
ingredientslisted are Carbofuran, Dichlorvos, Chlorpyrifos, Chlorpyrifos-ethyl, Cypermethrin, Lambda
cyhalothrin. Varioushealtheffects have been feltby producers, throughitching, constipation, colds, convulsions.
To reduce the healthriskslinked to the use of pesticides, plant protection agents must inform and train producers
on the importance of rational and safe use of pesticides
