REGARD SUR LES PARCOURS DE LA STEPPE ALGERIENNE : UNE REVOLUTION AU RYTHME DE DEVOLUTION - CAS DE LA REGION DE M'SILA -
Abstract
The main objective of this contribution is to establish a diagnosis of the steppe rangelands in the
M'sila region. Field investigations in 11 representative areas revealed that the pastoral environment is under the
influence of a degradation spectrum negatively impacted by the combination of several factors causing an
imbalance at several levels. The rangelands are being systematically cleared, accelerating the spread of the
desertification phenomenon, while the nomadic farming system, based on hoarding (storing sheep on the hoof),
is leading on the one hand to an overloading of pastures and on the other to strong pressure on grazing. Given
this alarming situation and the fragility of the steppe ecosystem, a new strategy is needed, based on rational use
and efficient management of pastoral areas. In other words, opt for an integrated and participatory approach.
