EFFECT OF SOME PHYSICAL TREATMENTS ON GERMINATION OF ACORNS AND THE FURTHER GROWTH OF HOLM OAK SEEDLINGS (Quercus rotundifolia LAM.)
Abstract
In the present study, the influence of certain physical treatments on the germination of acorns and development of the young seedlings of Holm oak were analyzed. The results obtained showed that a removal of the teguments, followed by a soaking for 72h in ordinary water strongly stimulates the germination speed of acorns. This treatment does not influence the further growth and development of the young sowings. However, a heavy mortality (59.6%) of young seedlings was recorded after transplantation. This mortality is probably due to the fungal pathogens responsible of the damping-off disease.
